Galaxies are rarely found in isolation. They are often found in associations held together by gravity. These gatherings are called groups if they contain up to 50 galaxies, or called clusters if they contain hundreds to thousands of galaxies. These groups and clusters are themselves bound together into structures called superclusters. The Milky Way Galaxy is one of the largest members of a group of about 30 nearby galaxies that make up the Local Group of galaxies. The Local Group has a diameter of roughly 10 million light years. The center of the Local Group lies between The Milky Way and a similarly sized galaxy called Andromeda. Andromeda is the only other spiral galaxy in the Local Group that can be seen in the night sky with the naked eye (although only on a clear, dark night). The Milky Way has gravitationally gobbled up roughly a dozen smaller galaxies within the Local Group over the last 13 billion years. The Milky Way Galaxy is scheduled for a giant collision and merger with the Andromeda Galaxy in about 5 billion years’ time! Stay tuned!
